## Transcript

Welcome to the Moulin Rouge. It's like the the the kind of message of the show truth, beauty, freedom, love. People feel that when they watch Moulin Rouge. It's a fantasy of maybe what it could have been. It's not period accuracy at all, but it feels like it could be the one of the goals in the costumes was to bring an element of the Moulin Rouge of Paris and also a sensuality and the sense that these are artists and people who have a passion and a commitment to their lifestyle and what they believe in. And that each number, because there's a different energy with each song, that it have its own unique visual.

The choreography on the show is quite athletic. It is nontraditional. For instance, with the cancan. They do a few classical cancan moves, but then it quickly goes in a completely different direction where they're on the floor and there were certain things where it needed to satisfy the cancan esthetic, but also be able to inhabit a very different style of choreography. There's something that happens on each project where I really feel I visualize what I hope it will be. I spent a lot of time sketching people always, when they come to my studio, was comment that my desk is like covered with a razor shavings because I'm always doing something.

No, that's not right. That's not right. I do it over and over and over again until I feel it. It has the right energy for me because I feel like if it doesn't look right in the sketch, it's never going to look right in person. My sketches always are very accurate, too, in terms of what the costume actually is. More is less. And sometimes when you do a costume, it can have too many things going on and it becomes less. So it's just getting the right balance of enough desk decorative detail, enough silhouette without going so far that it becomes cluttered and hard to look at. It's always great for any costume designer to see when the actor becomes the character and embraces their costume, and when they let you know that the costume you gave them really helps them be that character.

I think it's an experience people want to have over and over again because it's so pleasurable to be in that room and seeing these wonderful performer who's hearing the wonderful music and hopefully enjoying the costumes.
