All Egyptian people. >> We are [ unk ]. >> Hit him. Hit him. >> Demonstrations on Friday swelled to the point of turning Cairo into a war zone. Police chased protesters with tear gas, rubber bullets, and batons. >> We don't have any guns, but they shoot us. >> By nightfall, the protest had overwhelmed positions, setting police vehicles and the ruling party headquarters on fire. That's when the Egyptian army moved in. >> People in Egypt say that they've been afraid of the police force for a long time. The police are the people who crushed demonstrations, who round up political prisoners. They're well- known for the systematic abuse and torture. >> The army, armed with men, would speak. Okay? But police? Every policeman, bad man. >> The army is perceived as the heroic force that comes from the people that is responsible for liberating Egypt and fighting against Israel in multiple wars. And so, they just view that the army is here to save them. In 1952, during the Egyptian revolution, it was the military revolution. The army played a very heroic role. Since then, that perception hasn't diminished. Right now, this seems like a pretty calm, peaceful, friendly protest. And that's what we've been seeing here in Tahrir over the past few days. >> People have brought their families, they're handing out food, they're praying together. But without the police, the city has fallen into chaos at night. Businesses have been looted and vandalized. >> We're seeing that especially on burnt police vehicles, on government buildings. But we're also seeing it on symbols of America. Right here next to me is Kentucky Fried Chicken. Here, someone has written 89 million Egyptians against 1. >> Now, in Sunday night, we're hearing reports that the police will be deploying again around Cairo, but that they're under orders to avoid Tahrir Square and not to interfere in the demonstrations.
