## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] I wanted to be a rock star. I decided when I was about 11. I chose music because I was good at it. I had a really good ear. I loved songs. I wanted to be a song writer. But, I think I was more interested in having a job that connected me to people. [ MUSIC ] We've made over a million dollars. In a 30 day campaign to put money towards my record. And everybody feels fantastic. [ NOISE ] The reason everyone is so excited, I mean beyond my little record, in this project, is we're really looking at crowd funding as a new future model for how musicians and artists, Can connect with their fans and their audiences and put out music.

[ MUSIC ] [ SOUND ] My first band, The Dresden Dolls, started out in 2000 and we were independent for. [ MUSIC ] Three or four years. And when we got pretty, big locally we signed with Roadrunner Records, which was a major label. And, they really, really helped us a lot. But then when we made our second record, they became less interested in us. They sort of stopped doing work. And the relationship became less copacetic, but we were stuck. And, I gave it one more shot with my solo record, Who Killed Amanda Palmer ?, In 2008, and it. Was so royally messy. I said, you know. My fan base is pretty big now.

These guys aren't understanding me. The relationship isn't working. They want me to be someone i'm not. I think it's time to go and try and do this myself, and I think I know how to do it. [ MUSIC ] We're gonna play the record for you guys. Wow. Crowd funding in some form or another has existed since the beginning of time. Kick starter is just a really cool slick organized way of combining people to help get you off the ground and raise capital for a projects that doesn't exist yet. [ MUSIC ] I think this can pretty much work for anyone but you need to keep your goals pretty realistic. You know, a starting band can probably raise a thousand dollars, I don't know if they can raise a hundred thousand.

So, you need to kind of aim for the level you're at but I think the system pretty much scales at anyone. $ 1, 192, 793. 00 My relationship with my husband, Neil Gaimon, who's a writer is. It's so weird, and it's hard to explain to people. Right, Neil? Neil brought a banana and I brought my ukulele. You know, we're a strange couple of artists but I think it wouldn't work any other way. [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] [ LAUGH ] [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] [ LAUGH ] Love you too! [ LAUGH ] People are always asking us, are you gonna collaborate on a big project? And the answer is no. We've done little projects together that aren't very stressful and big.

And. Mostly, we just, we need each other to prop each other up. We don't need any reasons to argue. [ MUSIC ] That's right. [ LAUGH ] I am gonna be releasing this album in September. And then touring on it for over a year. All over the world. Pretty much every continent. And I think in order to stay sane. I don't wanna think about what's next. All of what I do is about collaborating and throwing parties and finding people to work with, and getting everybody involved, including the fans. And so it's an extended family of thousands of people that's been growing for ten years. And that's why you're seeing this huge outpouring of support.

It's not Round them, and it's not sudden. If you really love the people who support your work, they'll go to the ends of the earth for you. [ MUSIC ]
