## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] It's hard to focus on your finances during the summer months. Financial expert Jill Schlesinger is here to tell us how we can tune out without being financially irresponsible. Thank you, Jill. Great to be here. So where should we start? I had this old professor of finance and he used to say, kiss, keep it simple, stupid. And it's a perfect mantra for the summer, it really is. And I think that we place To start might be. But just going through your tracking and bills. So you want to automate some of your bills. A lot of people have late payments. I can't believe why. Just do your online banking.

Set up some money to go to some of these recurring bills every single month. Make yourself a little bit sane, so you don't have to worry about having a late payment. We also wanna make sure that anything in your life that can be automated is automated. A lot of people are really liking this idea of putting everything on one credit card actually, because then they can track all their expenses on that one card. I also kinda like the idea of tracking your expenses with some sort of app. And we've talked about this like mint or you need a budget. All these things can really help you and take away the stress of what your finances bring to your life.

Okay, so how about savings? I mean summer can be expensive. Maybe you're spending money on a vacation. Is there a way to keep your savings on track? Well I think every time we can automate something it's great so if you can tell your bank or your mutual fund company or your money market account and you say hey, take some money every single month from my checking account three days after I get paid and push it over here into savings that's great. Again, if you just do it maybe $ 10 a pay period it actually adds up to real money over time. Now while you're at it, I know you're gonna tell me no, savings rates are so low, it's so horrible.

Well you know what, you can go to DepositAccounts. com, spend five minutes there and see if there might be a better alternative for you. You might even want to check whether a credit union is available. They tend to have better savings rates than your traditional bank. So, what about your investments? People say sell in May, go away. Does that really hold water? Well, some years it does and some years it doesn't. And so, what I would say is who cares? We don't really wanna start market timing at this point of the year anyway. And you don't want to end up second guessing yourself even if you are right, so again autopilot.

Set that portfolio up. Do auto rebalancing, almost every company has this option now where your allocation remains in line. You know, maybe one other thing to do before you go away for the summer? How about consolidating some of those old accounts? Everybody's got an old retirement account somewhere. I think it's a lot easier to manage your money When it's in one place. So when possible consolidate some old accounts, set that portfolio on auto rebalance, don't muck around with it and have a great summer. Great, thanks so much. Great advice. Thank you. [ MUSIC ]
