## Transcript

There he is. Hi bud. [ SOUND ] It may not be the weekend's biggest sporting event, but it's definitely the cutest. For the ninth year, the field is set and the cameras are rolling for the Puppy Bowl. The annual puppy playoff pits the rescued balls of fluff against each other on turf not so different from the Super Bowl. The object is simple. Essentially one rule, drag a chew toy into the end zone and And it's a touch down. The dog with most touch downs is MVP but they all get the same prize, hugs, treats, a nap and a place to call home. Referee Dan Schachner mediates the puppy playtime. Schachner is the biggest mammal on the field in the sporting world's cutest event which airs on Animal Planet on Superbowl Sunday February third.

It looks like fun and games but Shatner says it's no day at the dog park. Imagine every player was Tom Brady. That can get distracting, especially as he watches where he steps and enforces the rules. It's a lot of delay of game, usually because of things like napping or pooping or peeing. As annoying as it might be, you kind of have to let it happen. Obviously they are puppies and they need their naps. Sometimes I'll nap with them. It's tiring. Organizing the puppy bowl is no simple game. The starting lineup is particularly taxing. Each of the 60 pups enters the field in dramatic slow motion. Go Masquerade.

Some bounded onto the field like pros with their eyes on the prize. [ SOUND ] A squeaky toy held be an energetic volunteer. Others are more apprehensive about their starring role and needed a few tries to even make it onto the field. All of the pups needed a nice long nap afterwards. During her glamor shots after the game, Lucy, a Basset hound mix could barely keep her head up. [ SOUND ] They're a little worn out right now. We have about 60 puppies. You know, sometimes they bring siblings. They selected the four that we have here today, and I felt like a proud mother, you know, you're kid gets selected.

And here we are! This year, filming was delayed, due to hurricane Sandy. But a week later, the shoot went off without a hitch. The water bowls stayed full, and there were even a few new stars. Each year we try to exapand on, And, and the cute factor. [ LAUGH ] Whether that be incorporating cheerleaders. We've had everything from chickens. This year we have hedgehogs. But the focus is still squarely on the puppies. And no matter who scores the most touchdowns, [ SOUND ] all the puppies are winners. That's because they're all rescue dogs from shelter dogs from across the U. S. And Toporoff says 99 % of Puppy Bowl players are adopted by game day.

The pups have time to rest or mingle with their fellow competitors in the locker room while they wait for their moment in the spotlight. But mostly it's a time for some puppy love. Aww, isn't he adorable. Yeah. This is You do not top this. This is the top for, not just myself, but for many people who who love Puppy Bowl, who love Animal Planet. This is pretty much as good as it's gonna get. For time. com, I'm Terry Cooke.
