Almost all the residents of this former trading post in Sudan's Blue Nile State fled when fighting erupted between these rebel soldiers [ SOUND ] And Sudan's government forces. [ SOUND ] Many men in Blue Nile fought with the army of the South during Sudan's decades of civil war. But when the two countries split in July, Blue Nile became part of the new North. Given Sudan's bloody past, the separation has been mostly peaceful, but freedom fighters whose home states became annexed to the North have been cautioned with Kartoum in several spots on the new North- South border. [ NOISE ] In October the leader of the Blue Nile rebellion. Invited a group of journalists to his base in the bush. To talk about why he is waging war against the government. Of President Omar Al- Bashir in Kartoum. Sudan is built as Bashir bought clemency. Is an Arab Islamic country. We don't have problem with Islam. This is a religion. I'm a Muslim myself, and I'm very proud of that, of being a Muslim. But I've never been I will never be an Arab, and I've never been an Arab. What created me, otherwise? We want to build a country that is, the citizenship is a basis for it. The rule of law is a basis for it. Not ethnicity and not religion. A guard was ousted from his post as governor of the state after fighting broke out between his forces and Al- Bashir's military in September. He says Al- Bashir has been sending Antonov bomber planes here ever since, killing more than 70 civilians. [ NOISE ] [ INAUDIBLE ] Come, come, come. Take cover, my friend. [ FOREIGN ] We take cover in a dry creek, listening to the planes circle overhead. We hear three bombs drop nearby. [ SOUND ] [ NOISE ] As the rebels in the Army vie for control of the state, civilians have been leaving their villages by the thousands, setting up camp in secluded areas where they think the bombs won't find them. [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] Others didn't have the chance to run. In the village of Mijas, not far from one of the soldier's camps, residents say they witnessed a bomb that killed seven people. [ FOREIGN ] Regardless to this too, we found like three people dead in this house. [ FOREIGN ] And over, and over there, we found outside, another person is dead. President Omar Al- Bashir has lambasted this out for aiding rebels in Blue Nile, an accusation the new government has repeatedly denied. But as North- South relations once again deteriorate, observers worried the simmering conflicts could develop into a proxy war between the new neighbors. As fighting enters it's third month everyone continues to pay the price. This 20- year old soldier is having his arm amputated after it was blown apart by a piece of shrapnel from one of the bombs. The staff at Kurmuk hospital says hundreds of soldiers have been killed in the fighting. [ SOUND ] Another fighter who has been given Ketamine as an anesthetic, is having his leg set after a bullet fractured the bone [ SOUND ]. [ NOISE ] On November 4th, President Al- Bashir announced that his government forces had taken over Kurmuk and pushed Agar and his fighters back into the bush. What that means for civilians living in and around Kurmuk is unclear. The president has strictly forbidden any aid organizations going in to assist civilians in the conflict zones. Today's one month away. We plan to shuttle everything, the drugs, the dressing materials. We used to fly the drugs from eh, Kenya here to this airstrip we have here. But now it becomes a bit dangerous, so, the, the risk, the pilots cannot reach this place easily. We see the town here, Kormuk Town, which is really congested with about, 3, 000 people, now people allow going out of the town, some of them have crossed the two piers, others have gone to the nearby villages. They lost everything. They lost everything in this war. [ SOUND ] The one thing I know is that there is no guerrilla that has been defeat, defeated in a way. Even, even the most strongest war, nations in the world have never defeated a guerrilla. One minute you, you take towns that's fair enough, you take the town but how will you know I'm in these trees now? Yeah, unless somebody tells you I am here. I started this guerrilla fighting in the Bruny island in 1984 with eleven men and I have not been defeated, we are there are if they come to the marshes we will be there, there is if they continue the war we are also there.
