## Transcript

>> The Person of the Year, if you don't know, started in 1927, celebrating the people, the group of people, the idea, the individual that most impacted our society, our world for this year. So, that debate is gonna start today.

>> The human effect on the year seem to be negligible in a way and that's what has been frustrating to people. So, that's one of the things that we're gonna talk about tonight. So, come on up here, the panel.

>> And the Tea Party is my big nominee for Person of the Year. We're seeing a cultural shift from the likes that my father said he hasn't seen in his lifetime. I think just the fact that Christine O'Donnell got as far as she did really says something in no way is she qualified to do anything. And this woman could have been senator. The Obama administration has completely made the Tea Party possible because they're just ignoring things culturally.

>> You were struck from the voter records for- from the ballot--

>> I was embezzled, man.

>> Keep in mind. Haiti is the 2nd republic within the Americas, and for the first time, I felt that, through what had happened, through this devastation, that there was gonna be a chance for this country.

>> Uh- huh.

>> Actually, I'm glad about personal computers through the Person of the Year cover in 1982 and, of course, now computers, the internet, you know, all my life, and are my days, so it's a huge being such a huge opportunity to really be a point of influence. So, I think from that standpoint, I think there's an argument, we're not necessarily making a person but also making someone that embodies the movement of cultural change. I would argue in part for the smartphone. I think that when you think about what's happening with mobile technologies, there's the iPhone, there's Android, there's what it can do.

There's the way that it can connect people in Haiti. When you look at how they used-- used at Haiti to actually figure out where the resources are.

>> In Nigeria, there's 1. 6 million landlines, 67 million cellphones. The poorest village shares a cell phone that can text, and, you know, passing on the information in like you hold the torch of democracy in your hand.

>> Uh- huh.

>> Don't drop it. Pass the flame to other citizens in Nigeria. That happened in Nigeria.

>> The defining moment for our struggle was when Bloomberg, Mayor Bloomberg came up, and made his very famous speech, and he also said that politicians come and go but American ideals prevail. And I think he was very influential and it was, when he did it, many other politicians came forward and even the president had to follow suit.

>> I think it has to be Nancy Pelosi. She was the one who went to the president and said, " Don't let-- don't give up on healthcare. I can carry it. Let's stick with it. We can do it ." So, in terms of influencing the president to stay with something that was a sure lose where all the polls showed that it was a disaster, carried it, got it passed along with a lot of other things. Certainly, one of the best-- I think the most successful speakers ever, and at the same time, look what it all right.

>> I would have to say, you know, some people, like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck, who I believe, my opinion, as to what I believe is the American ethos, which is respect for immigrants, respect for, you know, freedom of religion, free enterprise and individualism. Well, on two of those, they have no respect.

>> Uh- huh.

>> They have no respect for immigrants and they have no respect for religious freedom. So, I don't know how they call themselves American, and they would be my bad guys.

>> Thank you so much for coming tonight.
