## Transcript

>> Dell Battle, a third- generation pipefitter wants to salute Obama's accomplishment with his customized Harley- Davidson.

>> Obama- themed bike is in honor Barack Obama and the things he's accomplished. And I feel I ought to do something to show my appreciation for what he's about and what he's doing for the country. I know he's about small businessmen and putting people to work and whatnot. I wanna start my own business and hire some people, help the economy. You know, put some people to work. I could say I hope [ unk ] is dead. If he, you know, see this bike, maybe he can come out and sign it like the other themed bikes that people have with these type of shows. And so, making all the way original, authentic, I don't think anybody done anything like this.

This is the first one that I know of, and I kinda kept it a secret until after he won the election. But now that he's in there, we're just gonna show it and we appreciate everything he'll do for the country. So, we're just gonna do this in his honor.

>> At this defining moment, change has come to America.

>> Barack Obama's victory last November has inspired people around the world. But for many from Chicago, Obama's adopted hometown, his historic inauguration this week is a journey worth witnessing in person. The Sims and Brown families are going to Washington so their children will witness a living extension of the Civil Rights Movement.

>> As soon as he won the election, at first, it came my mind we need to go there.

>> Patrick Brown is a 49- year- old pastor.

>> I was born doing the Civil Rights Movement when I was a kid.

>> Uh- huh.

>> I had the opportunity in college to go to the-- was 1983 reenactment of the March on Washington. And that has stayed in my mind, stays in my mind even now. But this gives them a chance, the best of chance to really get the feel of what-- to me, what the Civil Rights Move was like when they have the large marches in bee and the crowd of people who are excited about, as you said, a movement. That's something that I am sure they'll never forget, either.

>> Both families are going with the list of expectations, like resolving the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the economic crisis. A group of kids from Chicago South Side is going armed with new confidence that if a man born into humble means can reach the world's most powerful office, they might escape poverty.

>> I wanted the ones that when they go down there, even if they didn't see him, they were there, and they will remember that for the rest of their lives, and they will tell people about. And it would impact them to maybe come back to their communities and say what Obama always say, " Yes, I can ."

>> Diane Latiker runs Kids Off the Block in the South Side's Roseland neighborhood where Obama worked in the 1980s.

>> Everybody keep telling that they wait and see what Obama's doing. And so why am I to wait? But he's already done it for me.

>> How?

>> Because he inspired a generation that didn't believe in themselves. They didn't believe in adults, they didn't believe in their communities. If you wanna have any hope or belief in stuff and you're in despair, you'll care about nothing. Well, guess what? He inspired them. He inspired the young men who didn't care they might shoot somebody. He inspired the young men about to go to jail. You know what I mean? And not because of the color of skin. It's what he did.

>> One of the students going to Washington is 20- year- old Abdullah Brewer.

>> It felt good to vote for the first time. They gave me my list out where I could take it right here. Already got my list small, big.

>> What you got?

>> A pair of pants and a shirt, and some snacks.

>> He'll drive up there?

>> Yeah.

>> Well, I'm gonna ride it and get close as I can. They let me get all the way up, I was riding all the way up, you know. But you know, I know there's gonna be a lot of people there, a lot of things going on, and I'm just looking on going in and enjoy.

>> For TIME. com in Chicago, I'm Steven Gray.

>> We are going inside with one.
