## Transcript

In the not so distant future, this could be an important team member of search and rescue crews. Meet SCHAFT, the winner of the DARPA Robotics Challenge. Developed by Japanese team and owned by Google, the rescue and response humanoid can even drive a car-- kind of creepy. But SCHAFT didn't just win. It rocked the competition earning 27 points. Compare that to second place, this robot by IHMC Robotics that earned 20 points, and Carnegie- Mellon's Chimp robot won third place with 18 points. But some of the losers were more surprising than the winners. NASA's Valkyrie superhero robot that looks like it jumped out of an Iron Man movie earned a big zero in the competition.

The DARPA Challenge consisted of 8 tasks for the robots to complete, from climbing a ladder, opening a door, to walking over terrain. But don't let the possibly I, Robot situation freak you out. All of the high- tech humanoids are almost completely run by a remote operator. DARPA's program manager says the competition for a search and rescue robot was inspired by the 2011 Fukushima nuclear reactor meltdown in Japan. What we realize was these robots couldn't do anything other than observe. What they needed was a robot to go into that reactor building and shut off the valves. This competition was only a trial for the 2014 finals where teams will compete for $ 2 million in DARPA funding.

For TIME, Lauren Gores.
