This is the mausoleum for Dr. Dunlop, and you can see him in the corner there. And so, they're expecting Tales From The Crypt and somebody that come out of the ground or come out of a mausoleum. Of course, you see the doctor and his wife there and their pet parrot. My name is Susan Olsen, and I'm the historian for the Woodlawn Cemetery. Yes, we do meet people on the worst day of their life, but what's great about worrying in a cemetery is the acceptance of the inevitable. At one point, you realized everybody goes the same way and you have no control over it. Once you accept that, there is no better place to work. There is trees. There is bird. But for me, what I really like about cemeteries is the fact that everything has meaning, that whole concept of setting stone. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can a flood drown it. And this is Isidor Straus, lost at sea, April 15th, 1912 and his wife beside him. Woodlawn has 12 memorials to people who were passengers on the Titanic. Some are here because they were found. Some are not here, and some of them were survivors of the tragedy. The other thing is only a few of them will say Titanic on it. Not everybody defines their life by how they died. It's not how they wanna be memorialized or define their life. Occasionally, we will find people sleeping here in Melville's grave. We found people sleeping there before. But Melville, of course, is the site of every New York failed writer. He writes Moby Dick and all the critics tell him that it's pompous and boring and awful. And so, he passes on, he put in the ground at Woodlawn. We've actually had people dancing out there to get his energy. A lot of people will leave a portion of their manuscript and as it gets rained on, it sort of becomes a paper mache project. But you'll see lots of written words that sort of melt away on the top of Melville stone. Miles Davis will get a lot of bad CDs left for him. Like he's going to listen to them from inside the sarcophagus. He's here close to Duke Ellington. The number one request at Woodlawn is to be buried this close to Duke Ellington as possible. It's little neighborhoods. These people buy next to the-- the jazz musicians are next to the people they played with. The people who loved horseracing are all buried together. The entrepreneurs of Wall Street. You've got J. C. Penney around the corner from [ unk ] and Samuel Crest. Everybody is together because you do wanna be together forever. This is the one that's for sale. For $ 3. 5 million, we will take the best offer. Oh, what's gonna happen with me? I will probably go and be in my great grandfather's grave in Boston because there's room left in the plot. I believe very strongly when you're dead, you're done. And that's why you should live your life to the fullest. You know, everyone has their own thoughts whether it's reincarnation or going up to heaven. I'm more of the enlightenment period. When you're dead, you're done. Time is a clock.
