But what about that other time in the year? The one where we lose an hour. Frustrating could be one word to describe it. Unnecessary could be another. In fact, according to a Rasmussen poll last year, two thirds of Americans see no point in shifting clocks back and forth. The loss of sleep can be more than inconvenient. Looking at 23 years of data, researchers found workplace accidents increase signficantly the Monday following the one hour loss. And cyber loafing, using the internet for leisure instead of work, increases significantly after the To the switch. One index put the national cost of Daily Saving Time at over $ 430 million. Even gaining an hour of sleep in October can be dangerous. Some researchers say adding an hour of sunlight year- round instead of switching back to standard time could save 170 pedestrians' lives each year. [ MUSIC ] But not everyone is griping about the daylight saving shift. Retailers say, daylight saving time helps them because people are more likely to shop before it gets dark. And children are slightly more likely to exercise when there is an extra hour of sunlight in the evenings. No matter what the weather is like. So what options do we have moving forward? Besides keeping the system as is, or getting rid of it completely, one route could be switching to daylight saving time year round.
