Iconic comedienne Joan Rivers died Thursday. Late Night Show hosts paid tribute to her Thursday night, and one of the most touching was Jimmy Fallon's. We had her on our very first Tonight Show. When I, when I took over. She came out, and she came over to me, and she started crying, and gave me a kiss. It was really emotional. It was really nice. Some fittingly emotional words, considering Rivers' long history with the show. The Tonight Show is where she got her start in the 60s, and she continued making appearances after that, guest hosting regularly for Johnny Carson. After a falling out with Carson, Rivers was banned for decades ,.

Fallon broke that ban letting her back on the show which made his tribute that much more special. Other hosts paid their respects too. Besides being a pioneer for women in comedy, for everyone in comedy Joan was a very lucky person because she loved her job so much she never wanted to stop and she didn't have to stop because she was so great at it. It's hard to explain to people. Today, what an event that was. She would go on, she would guest host for Johnny Carson. And, everybody, people would gather in the livingroom. [ INAUDIBLE ] At that time, she was so, so outrageous. And talk about guts.

She would come out here and sit in this chair. And say some things that were unbelievable. I haven't been doing this job very long but I have not sat next to anyone who told more jokes faster than Joan Rivers. And Craig Ferguson added some humor something Rivers surely would have appreciated. > Uh, we lost Joan Rivers today one of the old time greats, yes, I know it's terribly sad I just hope. That when Joan meets the Man Upstairs he's wearing something she can insult. I [ LAUGH ] Rivers' daughter Melissa released a statement following her mother's death. She said her mother loved to make people laugh.

And knows that her final wish would be that people return to laughing soon. Thanks for watching.
