## Transcript

What looked like a tiny speck of light, even on NASA satellites, was actually the brightest space explosion ever recorded. The gamma ray burst was recorded in April. But scientists now say it's the best chance they've ever had to analyze a massive star collapsing in on itself. When that happened, it created a black hole and generated a blast wave. NASA's Swift satellite recorded the blast, which scientists call a monster gamma ray burst, or GRB. Scientists say, while the star collapsed in a galaxy 3. 6 billion light years away, that's still only a quarter of the universe away from the Earth. One researcher from the UK wrote in a statement, GRBs normally appear very faint.

But in this case, the burst happened only a quarter of the way across the universe, meaning it was very bright. The resulting radiation won't affect Earth. In fact, it happened so far away, we're only just now seeing light from the explosion four billion years after the actual blast. Now, it would be a different story though, if one happened a bit closer to us in our own galaxy. So, say only a thousand light years away. If this happened, the radiation would blast off our ozone layer. Probably no reason to freak out though. Scientists estimate these explosions happen only once every 500 million years.
