## Transcript

There are a 113 million households in the United States today, and together, they use up around 22 % of the energy consumed in the country. That adds up to a sizeable amount of coal, natural gas, uranium, and other inputs that go into electricity production in America. [ MUSIC ] But a few simple energy efficiency practices can help reduce your monthly energy bill, leaving more money in your pocket, and less pollution in the air. Here are six simple strategies for reducing your carbon footprint, and your energy bill with it. About six percent of the energy used in the average household goes into air conditioning.

You can reduce the amount of energy used to cool your home dramatically. Between 205 and 50 % by switching to a high efficiency air conditioner and keeping windows shut and regularly cleaning the unit's filters. Similar savings can be found when warming your home. Turning your thermostat down for eight hours a day between just 10 and 15 degrees can reduce your heating bill by 5 % to 15 % annually. Appliances use up about 13 % of the energy in American households. When plugged in to a wall socket appliances like televisions and computers continue to leach electricity. Even when turned off. Using a power strip instead of plugging them directly into the wall makes it easy to unplug appliances by simply switching off the power strip.

You can reduce electricity by keeping the refrigerator door closed as much as possible, and only running the drier with a full load in it. These are two of the energy hungriest appliances in your house. a great way to make sure you're maximizing energy savings is to buy appliances with the energy star logo, which means they reserved Department of Energy and EPA approval for their energy efficiency. These are smart appliances, as they conserve energy by adjusting themselves to your needs and usage patterns. Even if driving fast and erratically doesn't cost you your life, it'll definitely. Cost you dollars.

Fuel economy tends to decrease at speeds above 50 miles per hour, and the fast starting and stopping associated with jerky, aggressive driving can reduce highway fuel efficiency by up to 33 %. The machine you're watching this on right now is a significant energy hog. Reduce your computer's electricity usage by turning it off when it's not in use. Screensavers may save old computer screens from overuse, but they don't save any energy. The biggest electricity hog in your home is likely to be the water heater. Accounting for between 14 and 25 % of the energy your home uses. Cut down on your usage by turning the water temperature down to about 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

[ MUSIC ] Finally, switching from old incandescent light bulbs to more efficient lighting technology. Can save you a pretty penny. About 50 dollars a year for every 15 bulbs you upgrade. CFO bulbs will give you energy savings up to about 75 %, while LED lights will save up to 80 % and both will last many times longer than the traditional incandescent.
