## Transcript

We're all getting the new Facebook Timeline profile. We're all in this together. It's all being foisted upon us whether we like it or not. And I know what you're thinking. Doug, aren't you irate? Of course I am. Look at me. I'm irate as can be. But you could either do what I do and just stuff your anger into a little ball and cram it way down into your stomach, and hope that it never comes back up. Or you can follow these simple tips and tricks for getting started with the new Facebook Timeline interface. One of the first things you'll be prompted to do is choose a cover photo. This is important because it's the big fat widescreen photo at the top of your profile.

I'm going to choose this picture of me arguing with a five- year- old, which happens more often than you might think. You can edit it at any time by hovering over it. Maybe re- position it, choose a different photo, that kinda stuff. Next, you'll wanna highlight and hide certain things in your Timeline. Highlighting something will make it take up the entire width of the Timeline. Or clicking the little pencil next to it you can choose Hide from Timeline. Now if you hide something from Timeline, it's not deleted. You can get it back by going into your activity log. Your activity log is basically anything that's been written on your wall, anything you've posted to Facebook.

So here's the update I just hid from my Timeline. All I have to do is go back and find it, click this little box, and then I can plow it back in the Timeline, and there it is. Now adding a life event, these are new to Timeline. These are momentous events in your life. I'm gonna add my marriage. And notice I'm about to, accidentially save it as a public event. And I don't want the whole world in my marital business. Of course I consider anyone watching this video one of my new best friends, so you can be in on it. But I'm gonna find my momentous occasion on Timeline. I'm gonna edit it to friends only.

New breed of Facebook apps will leverage your timeline to literally post everything you're doing with these apps to your Timeline. Which is annoying in the case of Spotify here I don't need everyone knowing that I'm listening to Mega Death. So I can go into my settings and in to Apps and I can click on Spotify and it's very easy to just choose App Activity, privacy, friends. I wanna just do, I'll just do just me. And you can see on my own Timeline profile I can see that I am listening to this Symphony of Destruction by Mega Death. One of my friends has given my page, you can see no reference to any sort of Spotify activity.

And how do I know how my Facebook friends see my Timeline page? One of the greatest features of Timeline this little gear here, choose view as. It'll show you what your page looks like to the general public, people who aren't your friends. Or you can enter the name of one of your Facebook friends at the top, and it will show you how your Facebook profile looks to one of your Facebook friends. Yeah just crunch it up, and stuff it down. That's all I do, a few times of year I cry hysterically, but who doesn't, right?
