## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] Are Americans at higher risk of developing allergies? Why being obese in your 20s can shorten your life. And testing everyone for HIV. Here's this week's health news. A government panel is recommending that all adults be tested for HIV. Back in 2005, the same panel advised that only people at highest risk of developing the infection be tested. But recent studies show that anti- HIV drugs can do a lot toward slowing the infection, or possibly even preventing the disease. We know that obesity can pose health risks. But now, we know that's especially true for those who might be heavy in their 20's.

Among people who are obese in their 20's, about half developed heart disease, diabetes, blood clots or other chronic conditions by the time they were 55. A study involving 500, 000 patients, showed that those who take anti- depressants like Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft. Might be at increased risk of certain complications after surgery. It's not clear yet whether it's the drugs themselves, or whether these individuals who take anti- depressants share some other common condition that could be resulting in these complications. [ MUSIC ] We know that fish can be good for the heart, but it turns out it has benefits for the brain as well.

Fish like salmon contain omega three fatty acids. And a new study shows that people who consumed more of these fats were 19 % less likely to develop problems in thinking and memory, than people who ate fewer of the fats. It turns out that where you're born may have an affect on whether you develop allergies. Researchers found that children born in the United States tended to have higher rates of allergies. Why? It's possible that American children aren't exposed to as many microbes or allergens as children born outside the country. And that may have an effect on how their immune systems develop.
