## Transcript

>> Being healthy involves making smart food choices but diet trends like the Low- Carb craze have put a greater emphasis on meat than fruits and vegetables. A new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that this way of eating maybe harmful to your health. In fact according to the study it may actually shorten your life.

>> In this study we followed two large groups of people; a group of men and a group of women, we followed them for about 20 to 26 years. Some of them by choice ate high- carbohydrate diet and some of them by choice ate a lower carbohydrate diet.

>> The results showed the people who replaced carbs with meat were 23 % more likely to die during the course of the study from heart disease and cancer. On the other hand, people who ate more vegetables and plant- based sources of protein live longer by 26 %. So, what is the best way to eat? We enlisted the help of Marissa Lippert, a Registered Dietician and author of the Cheater's Diet, to take us to the grocery store and give us some tips.

>> I think we're really inundated with so much information around diet and eating well, low- carb, no- carb, we don't know what to eat anymore. It comes down to the quality of the carbohydrate and the type, and what we're eating. So, here we've got Quinoa, and this is a type of carbohydrate that we do actually want to be eating. The keyword to look for is whole grain, and the more simplified the ingredients the better. So, bans are really fantastic, they're an excellent source of carbohydrates and again fiber so they're stabilizing our blood sugar level and we're getting more full faster. But in our diet we do not needed that much [ unk ], we need a little bit of a good source of lean source, some great options here; we've got a sirloin steak which is nice leaner cut, and again going to be less fat and less saturated fat.

I love cheese, I'm not giving so we got to figure out a manageable way to keep it within our diet; small quantities. I buy really good quality cheese, low- fat Cheddar cheese, low- fat Parmesan, you get much more satisfied. The fats are also less, that's the trick to [ unk ] eating.

>> Under Marissa's plan, it's all about eating a balanced diet of carbs and protein; she even leaves room for dessert.

>> So, I think really the take- away from the study should be coming back to basics and thinking about what's on our plate and how much we're actually eating. Again good quality food, [ unk ] ingredients the better. You can't really [ unk ].

>> I'm Natasha Del Toro reporting for Time. com.
