## Transcript

Hi, this is Matt Peckham with Time, ad I am playing a game called Firewatch by a studio called Hamposanto, it's sort of an interactive narrative adventure in which you play a middle aged man named Henry, that's who I'm controlling here in first person. He has experienced emotional turbulence to say the least in his life, won't go into that detail because it's a little bit Bit of a spoiler, and so he has volunteered to come out here in 1989 just after the Yellowstone fires of 88. He's volunteered to come out here and be a fire lookout. And a fire lookout in the Shoshoni national forest in Wyoming.

So that's what the game models here it's fairly large, semi open area. And a fire lookout their job is to That's their real job. Their job is to come out into the wild there and stay for extended periods of time. They stay in these lookout towers and keep an eye out for fires. So that's what you're doing. Expecting sort of, you know, I think quietude, solace and then, you know of course, naturally things start to go a little strange. And You are interacting with another supervser, another fire look out. Her name is Delila, and that's your only communications to speak of with other human beings.

So most of the game pivots on their back and forth. Really chatty applicable, personable, interesting, introspective dialog. You do this with. Radios here. I can't say anything now. I had a moment back there. You may have seen that, you know, it's cold, cold fog or something like that. I could've commented on. I wanna be careful here. I don't wanna spoil any of the story so I'm not gonna go into the dialog but I do wanna talk a little about the look of the game. That is probably what people notice Fire Watch most for because if I zoom out here and look Can see it's a very different look. You can't go to these mountains.

They are kind of window dressing, but you can see the angular, silhouetted style, the coronal flare here, or whatever you wanna call this. Just very beautifully done. The clouds, just very Very stark contrast there to the sky. And then this sort of hard- edged beautiful, I don't even know what you would call that, if that's like Cirrus clouds or wind patterns. But just very, very gorgeous look to the game, obviously not, somewhere between realistic in terms of the detail on the trees here. And then this hyper realistic layer, like a post- processing effect Apply here everything. So this is Henry's look out tour, I'll just go up it here, just to show you what you can see and there's an out house down there.

You can zoom in on things, a lot of things if you move the pointer over you can interact with them [ INAUDIBLE ] comment on them or you can comment on them and then she'll respond to you. The game takes place over maybe Four of five days. Often times we'll start up here and then have to go out into this world. This is something that is called an Osborne fire finder. It's really cool. There's a lot sort of fire look out chrome in the game, as we would say. Chrome meaning sort of hyper detailed stuff that applies to the world. You can't use it, that's a weakness of the game in my view. I was really looking forward to being able to interact with some of the stuff but it is It is very cool to see it here and to see it modeled so carefully and detailed.

So here we are, just for a quick look before we go at one of the later areas in the game, or the later moments. Mostly just to show you what the engine can do and how the world can change. You know the coloration and the lighting and the effects are constantly changing, constantly moving in one direction and another. You can see it's just Just very vivid. The saturation, the color saturation, the atmospheric effects. And the game is always doing this. It's always changing the mood and the atmosphere. It's a character. The environment is, you hear that said about, sort of, non living things. The environment is alive, really, in a figurative sense.

I mean, it's just so differentiated and just so beautiful. It is worth I think visiting this world just for some of this alone, to see some of the possibilities audio visually that can be achieved when you have just a really first first rate art team doing some pretty phenomenal things with colors, and sounds, and light. So there you go, that is a quick look at Campo Santo's Firewatch. [ BLANK_AUDIO ]
