[ SOUND ] [ MUSIC ] You've got a new job, congratulations. Now you got to tell your boss you're quitting. That can be an awkward conversation. Sometimes your boss takes is personally. But you want to make sure that you leave your job in the most professional way possible. You may need a reference from your job down the road, and your work- mates and your boss are really your network. So you wanna keep everything in a positive way. Make sure the first person to know that you've got a new job is your boss. You don't wanna let him hear it from somebody else. You may be eager to tell your colleagues about what a great new job you have, but word gets around pretty quickly.

Two- weeks notice is standard when you're leaving a job, but if you're in the middle of a big project, you really wanna try to wrap it up. Otherwise, you'll leave some bad feelings. But if you have a higher up job, say you manage a department or a lot of people, it'll probably take longer to find your replacement so giving three or four weeks notice is more appropriate and probably will be really appreciated, too. Do everything you can to ensure a smooth transition. Take a written document and write down your job description and all your key responsibilities and how you really get your job done.

You could offer to help find a replacement candidate and you can even help train that person if they come on before you leave. And within reason, you can offer your support after you leave. The best way to say goodbye is to go around in person and thank everyone. It's just a courteous thing to do and there's probably a lot of people that you want to thank that you've worked with. It's also a good way to leave your contact information and retain your network. Don't be a slacker those last few weeks on the job. When you only have a couple days left, you may be tempted to come in late or leave early But you wanna work hard right up until the end.

The last thing you wanna leave behind is a bad impression. [ MUSIC ]
