While the temperatures of this month are bringing us the colors and the crispness of fall, the weather of the past months ruined much of the nation's apple harvest. The Boston Globe reports last year's bumper crop also means trees need their rest this year. And the USDA expects Massachusetts output alone to drop by 9 %. While some orchards in New England are still open and ready for customers, a brutal winter and mild season means many operations won't have apples available through the end of the month. In southern California, much of the coverage is focused on Julian, a town known for its apple festival. The state's ongoing drought has been well documented and areas without irrigation are being hit especially hard. One Julian orchard owner says of his 500 trees all but three are bare . >> There's probably a box left. Last year we had 1, 200 boxes. But some of those apple festivals are still on whether they be west coast or east coast.
