## Transcript

>> It has been a journey undertaken through the streets of London ever since the days of King John and still nearly 800 years old the Lord Mayor of London travels through the castles to swear an oath of allegiance to the crown before he can take the job on, but don't confuse the Lord Mayor of London with the Mayor of London Ken Livingstone. While Livingstone heads the greater London authority the Lord Mayor carries out an international role promoting the capital around the world. Previous incumbents famously include Dick Whittington, but what does it mean to this year's Lord Mayor David Lewis.

>> I'm a farmer originally who comes from Wales, and here I find myself the Lord Mayor of the City of London. I mean what a dream.

>> Nevertheless, any mayor requires that right- hand man or woman and a Lord Mayor can pull upon pageant master Dominic Reid.

>> The Lord Mayor will go to the Mansion House where he'll watch the show past him and the show will continue past him, past St. Paul's to the Royal Courts of Justice, and he will process at the back of a procession. He'll go to St. Paul's. He'll be blessed by the Dean of St. Paul's with the Lady Mayoress and then he'll go to the Royal Courts of Justice where he'll swear his oath of allegiance to the crown, and when he's done that then he's fully Lord Mayor.

>> If you can't make the annual event, the BBC televises it to the nation and in fact it was the world's first ever live TV outside broadcasting. This year was its 70th anniversary.

>> It's a big public event that people are aware of all around the world. We get to stop London for a day and we get to do it every year in to improve on it to get to refine that and develop you know a level of accuracy that really makes it, you know, split- second accurate and wonderfully sort of creative. I mean it's great. You know not many people get that sort of opportunity. The thing that's so special about it is the interaction between the people in the procession and the people who are watching it. It's that sort of human contact that makes it so special. Most of us in our daily lives don't confront quarter of a million people who are smiling at us and sort of genuinely wishing us well.

>> Now it probably doesn't say anything about this in the contractual job but if you are planning to become the Lord Mayor of London, you'd better know your stats.

>> We've been preparing it for a year because the Lord Mayor's Show has 150 fleets, 6, 000 participants, 145 sort of entries, 22 bands. I mean it's colossal for half a million people on the street, 3 million on television. It takes a whole year to organize it.

>> Pageant master Dominic Reid is chasing an interesting stat of his own. 2007 was his 16th year in the job and the record of 20 years is held by none other than his father, John.

>> It's been an enormous privilege for me as I give my father and it's allowed me to get to know him after he's gone in a way that, you know, has been great.

>> For 2 percent of our time we dress up. We have a bit of pomp and tradition which we think we do reasonably well in London. It's for the benefit of the crowds and particularly to the children, and it's just a wonderful enjoyable day.

>> This is Glen Levy reporting for TIME. com.
