## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] When I was a little kid we moved from an apartment to a house and I kept asking my mom to drive back to the old apartment. So finally she did and when we got there I took my little purse out and I said is this the part where we get to throw money up Out the window and she realized it was because I had heard my dad going on and on about how living there was like throwing money out the window and I had taken it literally and I thought that would be fun. And I think that shows, from an early age, my parents taught me not to be wasteful and no matter how much fun is, don't throw your money out the window.

The only formal piece of financial advice my mother ever gave me was to marry rich. Sorry, mom. What that taught me as a woman is the importance of being able to support myself and manage my finances so I didn't have to depend on anyone else. The best piece of financial advice I got was from my mom who, from a time I was very young, definitely too young to understand quite what she was talking about said, Davidson's don't buy adjustable rate mortgages. Davidson, only do fixed- rate mortgages. And while I haven't bought a house yet, that has served me well so far. My mom helped me decide to come to grad school.

She told me that my undergrad loans were their responsibility, but whatever I was going to take out for grad school, that was on my dime. And that kind of helped me realize that I needed to plan ahead for my own future, and she helped me really, wrap my head around that. She would get up with me and my sister, and she would cook for us. She would go off to work at her job where she stood all day, and endured cuts, and had to carry things, and stuff was heavy, and difficult. And then she would make dinner for us and talk to us about our day, and she never really complained about it at all. And I never really realized that she had this stiff upper lip, that, that she had this quality about her until I, you know, had my kid and, you know, worked full time and just realized how difficult it is.

My mom taught me to spend on things that I value. I definitely have a good balance of saving for the future and spending on. on things that I want, and she taught me that if I really want something, if I can't stop thinking about it, then it's okay to make the purchase. And enjoy my money! [ MUSIC ]
