## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] I was incredibly precocious as a child. I was definitely the kid that was daring other kids to jump out of the highest tree branch, breaking all my friends' bones and some of mine as well. I was Dennis the Menace. [ MUSIC ] The first time I saw somebody using a camera was my mother. [ MUSIC ] I just saw how much fun she had. She would sort of get down low and try to get the best shots. And that was not a profession at all, but you could see that she took creative passion from family photography. And then I just caught the bug. I became the one taking pictures of my friends and my dogs and anybody who would love me follow them around with the camera.

My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer while I was four and my dad was actually very unhealthy too and I lived with this fealty in my entire life [ MUSIC ] My mom died when I was 15 and photography for me was a way to freeze time and to capture the moments that we're happy and the moments that we're healthy and it was capturing somebody's spirit. [ MUSIC ] And that was ultimately actually how I got behind the camera. It's an honor for us to be here for the announcement of nominees Of the 90th Oscars. Fo achievment in cinimatography, Mudbound. [ APPLAUSE ] I don't think I even realized it had been 90 years and 600 and something nominees without a female representative.

I've never understood why there's so fe female VPs. I really believe that it speaks to everything we do well. Multitasking, empathy, emotion, For me it took 11 independent films before I got my first video film. And I see my mentees getting a studio call after two or three films, which is what my male counterparts were always experiencing. So that's a sign of a huge change. [ MUSIC ] I've always wanted to have kids. I mean that was something that you know I knew was going to be everything to me. I knew Creed was a possibility but of course Ryan calls me up and he like okay we're shooting January to March.

I was like **** I'm due in February. And it felt like this giant missed opportunity and yet there was nothing more important to me than having my son. [ MUSIC ] To this day, I'm an his, the thing I'm most proud of in this world and thankfully, you know I'm called up a few later and I got to collaborate with him again. Tell me something, what do you know about [ UNKNOWN ] [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] Black Panther was so exciting because it was so outside my wheelhouse. I've always been up for a good challenge. I think people fear what they can't see. You know, if they haven't seen a woman shoot a Marvel film, then they're very reticent to hire a woman to Shoot a Marvel film.

As if the pressure of shooting a giant movie wasn't big enough. It was so important to me to do it well so that the doors would open for other women in the future. It's about changing the whole perception to where we're perceived to be as inherently competent. As inherently smart, as inherently strong, as inherently visual as our male counterpart. [ MUSIC ] [ BLANK_AUDIO ]
