[ MUSIC ] Tech has changed many of our daily tasks, so it's no surprise that it's pushed the boundaries of traditional retail. With Americans busier than ever, retailers are pushing to make physical shopping a bit more hassle free, and closer to the one- click online shopping experience Experience we've come to expect, and shoppers expect faster checkouts. The checkout line as we know it has been dying for some time by consumer electronic companies have made faster checkouts synonymous with mobile pay. In the smartphone era, tech giants like Apple and Google ditch the clunky cash register For one tap apps that anyone can use.

Apple went so far as to equip the staff in its own stores with iPhones and iPads so they can roam around to take customer orders, book appointments and accept payments for purchases. Smartphones aren't the only checkout innovation. Mobile innovators like Square, have made the wipe and go payment option accessible to a wide range of businesses. In 2016 alone, about $ 50 billion worth of credit card purchases passed through Square's system. And Square Sellers, the network of businesses that use the financial service app, rank 13th in national annual retail sales, right behind companies like Best Buy and McDonald's.

Big stores are getting on board with better checkout technology. In October, Walmart, America's largest retailer, announced its plans to offer customers a Check Out With Me service that will enable Walmart employees to ring customers on the spot with mobile checkout scanners. Target and Kohl's aren't far behind. Announcing support for mobile devices in the checkout lane ahead of winter holiday shopping season. The goal, get customers in and out of stores as quickly as possible to end the painful payment process. But in the future, stores may have no checkout at all. Giant companies like Amazon and Walmart- owned Sam's Club are testing entirely cashierless stores.

There are currently six Amazon Go stores open in major cities like New York and San Francisco that use sensors and software to detect that customers take on and off shelves, automatically charging customers' Amazon accounts once they leave the store. Convenience chain 7- Eleven is also making moves to lose cashiers. In November it equipped 14 stores in Dallas with new technology that'll allow customers to skip the checkout line and scan and pay for items directly on their phone. Well, it's clear that mobile technology has nudged retailers to rethink their customer experience and may take a while for the checkout process to become fully automated.

In the meantime brick and mortar retailers are hoping a little bit of technology can make your holiday shopping a lot more efficient.
