## Transcript

There may be some evidence for the phrase nice guys always finish last but that doesn't mean they don't also sometimes finish first. That's according to Adam Grant, a professor at the Wharton Business School who spoke at this year's session of the Nantucket Project, an annual conference for business ideas. Grant explained why nice people typically finish last by putting them into three categories givers, takers, and matchers. He said that in a study of engineers, sales people, and medical school student, individuals with giver personalities, people who are generous without expecting anything in return, generally have the worst work performance, which sounds of depressing until you hear that it's not just self- serving takers that wind up on top but givers as well.

Givers make up the bottom 25 %. And the top 25 % for work performance. That's because sometimes their personality can be so overly generous it's harmful in the short- term. But in the long- term, their generosity can earn good will in the workplace and help them pick up new skills. On the other hand, takers tend to rise quickly, only to fall, when people realize their personalities. The takeaway, be nice at work, Just not too nice.
