## Transcript

>> During this presidential election year, the spotlight on Republican- leaning Cubans in South Florida shifts to a group of non- Cuban Hispanics in the middle of the state. This region is home to a diverse and growing Hispanic community and is one of the most swing- vote- prone blocks in the nation. In a state that's tied, many people feel the race will come down to independent Hispanic voters.

>> I am a singular. I'm an independent. I take to favor the Democratic side but I tend to favor just what's logical, what needs to be done.

>> Fernando Negron, a popular radio talk show host, embodies the political profile of many of his listeners throughout central Florida. Most of the areas of Hispanics are registered Democrat or independent, but recent elections like the 2004 presidential race showed more than half of central Florida's Latino voters casting their ballot for President Bush, but Negron says he believes Hispanics in this election are swinging back the other way.

>> People that pay full lots of gas, they gave them gas. People that go supermarket. People that buy a car, people that pay a house, mortgage. You guys gone that lead to the wrong side of the economy swing and I get calls to my show every single day about that. So I think that's a good reason why vote on this election for Obama.

>> Some Hispanics in this complicated region are not so sure.

>> You cannot go only because charisma. You have to analyze the individual about the experience, what's been done in the past.- Damaris Soto, a real estate professional based in Tampa has long aligned herself with the Democrats, but she has doubts about Senator Obama.

>> The way he grew up, he's grew up in the nation and he grew in the Muslim countries and this philosophy and the way that his mother brought him up, and he's very liberal.

>> Letter from John McCain from the Republican National Committee asking for money.

>> Dr. Pascual Bidot lives in Tampa. He also considers himself an independent.

>> To put Hispanic into a group and to claim Hispanics are going to vote this way or that way it would be a major mistake for any political analyst that would try to determine what Hispanics all want.

>> But this year, he knows exactly who's he going to vote for.

>> I know where McCain stands on issues and I know for certain especially with Sarah Palin, we all know where she stand. With Mr. Obama, with Mr. Biden, I don't know where they stand.

>> I had met mothers, I had met people that have some children in the Iraq war. Most of their families are crying every day because they can't get a hold of them, they can't call them. They wanna do something on the news that a few kids died in Iraq. They think to themselves he said is it my son.

>> You heard clearly Obama's message. Obama believed in the redistribution of wealth. Well, I'm gonna tell you. I'm not in the position to be redistributing my wealth. If I'm going to redistribute my wealth I want to it myself. I want to give it to my children, to my grandkids. I don't want to be giving it to Mr. Obama or Mrs. Obama.

>> Still, some Hispanic voters will decide in the voting booth.

>> Would you vote for John McCain? Do you feel like he's more qualified?

>> Yes, but still I had to make my decision. I'll make my decision in November. If not I will go for the Green party.

>> Natasha del Toro for TIME. com, Tampa, Florida.
