What with the North firing off rockets threatening another nuclear test and conducting a mock military assault on its neighbor. All that can only mean one thing, time to call in the cheerleaders. For the first time in nearly a decade, cheerleaders will accompany North Korea's athletes at the Asian Games this September. North Korea' official news agency is billing the move as a way to help melt frozen North- South relations. We've heard of basketball diplomacy, but cheerleaders? The daily beast is skeptical the cheer squad will do much in the way of mending ties between the bitter rivals. It may take more than a few splits and pyramids to make Asia forget about North Korea's human rights abuses and short range missile testing. This will only be the fourth time Pyongyang's cheerleaders have made an appearance at the international sporting event. According to the BBC, the last cheerleading contention in 2005, included Kim Jong Un's wife. As for this squad, a South Korean official tells Yan Hap there will be around 100 20- something women who are chosen on the basis of appearance and ideology. North Korea recently called for both sides to put an end to all military activity while at the same time continuing with short range missile tests.
