## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] Americans is my second book on this country my first book My America came out in 2006 and it was kind of a critical look at Nationalism and Patriotism during the Bush years with this, with this new body of work. I've, I've set out to try to do a broader look at, at, at the country, not so narrow minded and just focusing on Republicans and for me the photography is simple photography, its not complicated. Some people might, might even find it boring, there is a lot of symbolism, there is a lot of meaning in the book. And hopefully, hopefully you'll enjoy. [ MUSIC ] What sets this work apart from my first book, is that here I've attempted to get closer to some of my subjects.

[ MUSIC ] For me, it has the feel of a country that's come off its sugar high of nationalism and patriotism. Still, throughout the book, there is this underlying feeling of depression and loss. After two long wars, and an economy on the verge of collapse. [ MUSIC ] While working, I'm constantly looking for a visual way to capture a mood or feeling. A lone woman looking into a doorway, creating a mood of emptiness. [ MUSIC ] A country that allowed abandonment in New Orleans. [ MUSIC ] The emptiness of downtown Houston. The symbolisms of an exit. [ MUSIC ] The nation, pulled and pushed in different directions.

[ SOUND ] The symbolisms of keeping people in. [ MUSIC ] Keeping people out. Father and son struggling to pay medical bills. A nation of youth. A nation at war. [ MUSIC ] A nation exhausted. [ MUSIC ]
