It may seem odd to friend your boss on Facebook, afterall Facebook is still more about personal information than it is about professional business, but there are a lot of advantages to include in your boss in your social network. In fact, there is a research study that interviewed folks who had friend of their boss on Facebook and a number of them said that it actually help to improve their communication. More effectively with their boss. That makes sense. Instead of having small talk about the weather, if you know a little bit more about the personal relationship, then you may be able to have a more meaningful conversation.

Maybe about the last vacation that your boss took or how cute their kids are. On the other flip side of that, then the boss may see you in a different light as well. Maybe they'll see in your Facebook. Page that you had a big athletic accomplishment or you did some volunteer work or that your kids are really cute too. Now, you do have to be careful. Not every boss is gonna be comfortable being friends with someone that reports to them. You can kinda get a sense of that if you know if other people in your office are friends with your boss on Facebook or just simply if your office encourages you to use social media as part of your job.

If you're going to find your boss and your colleagues on Facebook, you're going to have to police what you share a little bit more. You can use privacy settings to control what people see, but you don't want your personal life to become fought over gossip around the water cooler.
