Nearly four years after the explosion that sent flames into the air, the largest off- shore oil spill in U. S. history into the sea, British Petroleum is now allowed to resume drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. The decision could lead to hundreds of millions of dollars in new business for the company. The EPA has agreed to allow BP back into the Gulf of Mexico to search for oil. It was just four years ago that BP's Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded, killing 11 workers. The EPA's decision drew praise from the business community and even the British government, but also outrage from those still trying to clean up after the spill.

Consumer activist group Public Citizen released a statement saying, the decision lets a corporate felon and repeat offender off the hook for its crimes against people and the environment. Though a Dallas- based energy analyst told the BBC, it's time to let them out from the doghouse. Let's let them get back to work. The Deepwater Horizon explosion was only the beginning of a year's long environmental disaster. A sea floor oil gusher pumped millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf for nearly three months before workers got a temporary cap on the leak. While oil slicks like these that formed during the leak haven't been seen in some time, experts say oil continues to wash ashore especially during storms.

BP can resume bidding for new leases Wednesday, the same day the U. S. Interior Department will put 40 million acres up for lease. BP was banned from drilling in 2012 when federal regulators concluded the company hadn't done enough to address problems that led to the Deepwater Horizon blast. In December, the British government took the unusual step of filing a motion in federal court to end the ban, calling it excessive and saying it affected British jobs and pension funds.
