As we made our way from village to village we suddenly came across an enormous bridge under construction as if a half built Golden Gate had been picked and dumped in the remote hollow of West Virginia. In a story that TIME later ran on China's breathtaking infrastructure program, the Baling Bridge, as it is known, became for us a symbol of China's new economic might, a power and energy that is quite literally changing the world. But then China has always held a fascination for TIME. Our founder, Henry Luce, was born and raised in Shandong Province. All his life, he tried to advance what he saw as China's interest and promoted friendship between China and the U. S. In 1937, TIME chose as its 'Couple of the Year', Generalissimo and Madame Chiang Kai- Shek. He is a salt seller's son, TIME said, she, a Bible salesman's daughter. There rise the moral and material leadership of the ancient Chinese people, covers a great page of history. Luce's devotion to the Generalissimo and Madame Chiang was not without controversy. It led to a bitter falling out with his brilliant wartime correspondent Theodore, better known as Teddy White. But, White's reportorial skills survived the butchery of New York Editors. In a harrowing report on a famine in Henan in 1943, White wrote of dogs eating human bodies by the roads, peasants seeking human flesh under cover of darkness, endless deserted villages, beggars swarming at every city gate, and indeed, TIME has always been there at China's darkest moments. In a vivid story in Tiananmen Square in 1989, our reporters noted how surrealistic ritual, a stately stylized dance ended in a spasm of fury. But our reporters have been there for the New China too to capture the thrill and excitement of the biggest story of our time, the return of one quarter of the world's people to the mainstream of human development. Twice, we chose as 'Person of the Year' Deng Xiaoping, the architect of the New China. The most fascinating thing about China now, we wrote in 1978, is that this is a society facing almost infinite possibilities. As it has been right from the start, and as Henry Luce, would wish it always to be. TIME will be there to watch those possibilities unfold.
