As you might have guessed, this another ruling that stems from Edward Snowden's data dump in 2013. The case was brought to court by an Austrian law student named Max Schrems. Europe's highest court essentially ruled the US- EU Safe Harbor Agreement is invalid. That agreement allowed companies to transfer data to the US as long as they were self- certified under the Safe Harbor program. For now the ruling doesn't necessarily stop the flow of data between countries. In the mean time, transatlantic data flows between companies Can continue using other mechanisms for international transfers of personal data available under EU data protection law. What that means is instead of EU flowing to the US freely, national data protection authorities can review individual transfers, like Facebook sending data about European users. To the US.
