>> This Olympic champion speed skater has 8 world records under his belt, but it wasn't exactly easy to become the first black athlete in the world to win the individual gold in any Winter Olympic Games sport. Meet Shani Davis, hails from Chicago's south side.

>> I came from a single- parent household and my mom had to get me ready for skating and then travel 45 minutes to an hour to go skating and then a 45 minutes to an hour back and went to school nights.

>> And that work ethic remains. He doesn't have a fulltime coach. He does hire pros from time to time to work on specific techniques, but he's otherwise fairly self- coached. And it served him well, and look at his stats, Davis has won 2 Olympic gold medals, 2 Olympic silver medals, he's a 48- time World Cup 1000- meter medalist, and a 26- time World Cup 1, 500- meter medalist. 31- year old Davis has been skating for 25 years now. Though he once said, " I did not want to be a champion growing up, just a fast skater ." Well, looks like he achieved both. Thanks for watching. I'm Lauren Zima.
