## Transcript

Airlines represent 3% of global emissions. Figuring out a way to reduce, if not eliminate those emissions is really critical to the global climate picture. Sustainable aviation fuel, to my mind, is a really cool technology or really cool setup technologies. Sustainable aviation fuel, in theory could reduce aviation emissions by 80%, that can be made in a variety of ways, everything from recycled cooking oil to bio fuels. It's what's called a drop in fuel, which means that you can take an existing plane and just drop in the sustainable aviation fuel. Airlines are not going to want to replace their entire fleet with some new technology.

A drop in fuel is perfect for transitioning fast. Sustainable aviation fuel exists today. I had a fun experience flying on a plane powered by sustainable aviation fuel from Chicago to DC. It exists today. It's safe, it works, it reduces emissions. The problem is, it's hard to get sustainable aviation fuel to market. Sustainable aviation fuel is slightly more expensive in some cases than jet fuel A, which is what airlines use to power their commercial planes. It also requires infrastructure buildout to get to market. And the way that airlines tend to buy fuel is that they buy it on the spot market.

They look at the price today. They pay that price. Some might engage in short term contracts, but nobody's buying aviation fuel for ten years out, or they're not buying significant quantities that way. And so the challenge is, how do you get enough funding to do the infrastructure buildout to get that fuel to market today? You might have buyers clubs where five airlines get together and say, we're going to commit that for ten years, we're going to buy a small amount each, but you add that up, and that's enough to give you confidence to the marketplace to build out this infrastructure. There's this interesting effort from the Besos Earth Fund and other partners to create what they're calling a green market makers.

They'll engage in a long term contract with sustainable aviation fuel makers and then sell that fuel on the spot market to airlines. Well also finding ways to monetize various tax incentives and credits. Adoption of sustainable aviation fuel is really of interest around the country and around the world. In the US, all three major airlines, United, Delta, American are engaging in efforts to get sustainable aviation fuel to market. You see it from global airlines. It's really seen as the most effective way to cut emissions. A KO, the global aviation organization is pushing decarbonization as a key feature of the sustainability of their industry, not just from a climate perspective, but also from a financial perspective.

This is something that consumers care about, that regulators care about. And so across the world, sustain aviation fuel is seen as a key solution. We have this technology. We know how the technology works. We know that it works, but we need to figure out the innovative financing and policy mechanisms that are going to get it to market.
