During a school raid in the northwestern city of Peshawar on Tuesday morning. There were around 500 students and teachers inside Peshawar's Army Public School at the time of the attack. While most escaped, some were taken hostage. The Pakistani Taliban took credit shortly after the attack started, telling media that six suicide bombers had scaled the school's walls in the morning with orders to kill older students. Peshawar's provincial chief minster released a statement saying almost all of the dead are children under the age of 16. Schools have long been a target of Taliban militants, who oppose educating girls. According to the Pakistani military, all six militants were killed after several hours of fighting but clearing the school and rescuing hostages has been delayed by IEDs. A Taliban spokesperson said the attack was retaliation for Pakistan's recent ground offensive against the militants in the country's northwestern Waziristan tribal area. The Pakistani military claims to have killed more than one. Thousand militants since its operations began in June. Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai condemned the attack calling it a senseless and cold blooded act of terror. In 2011 Malala was shot by the Taliban for advocating women's rights in Pakistan. Pakistan's prime minister Nawaz Sharif arrived in Peshawar Tuesday and called the attack the biggest human tragedy Pakistan may have ever seen.
