Thank you. So I wanted to ask first did this novel come out of your sense of change and the new identity that you had to take on when you became a parent yourself? I think I was probably as likely to write about having kids before I had kids as now, and maybe even a little bit more so, just because I like so much to write about people and situations that are really different from my life. I think I really use writing as an escape. But there is this funny way in which in having kids is this huge equalizer. I mean you see these people that you think, wow, I bet, I bet he was really cool, [ LAUGH ] but now he's chasing his son with the pacifier. [ LAUGH ] And there's no way around that. You know, in a way we are all kind of chasing the kid with the pacifier once we have the kid with the pacifier. And I do find that kind of hilarious in a way. And I, and I say that as someone who's done plenty of chasing with pacifiers, myself. I really responded, of course, because I went to the school that you described. I think without naming it in your book. I went to Lowell High School as did you. And, as a lot of readers probably don't know, the pit is real, it is. Yeah. It is were the rockers hang out. So much of what you said about that, was, as if you were writing one of your non- fiction journalism pieces, about my teen years and that to me was really phenomenal. Who were you able to kind of train that non fiction lens on your own life in that way? You know, it feels like there are two very different parts of my brain, the fiction and the non fiction. Although they overlap in terms of just areas of interest because I try as a nonfiction writer just to take on things I'm really deeply curious about. I think that the, may be that thing they have in common in terms of point of view is I feel like the job in both cases is to try to deliver up another point of view. The difference being that as a non- fiction matter I'm trying to render up what I discover in life and as a fiction matter I try to render up what I discover from my own imagination. This, The Goon Squad is incredibly ambitious. I mean, you talk about being free to create something that really hasn't been done before. Both in terms of narrative structure and I think not for you plans for the awards it would win, but just as a work of art. And it seems to me that you're saying, it, it was a process for you to get to the point where you felt like, I can do something that's completely different. And I can, I can think that big. I, I knew that structurally, it was kind of different. But I didn't feel like its reach was that huge. Yeah. I think in a way, I was not, either its reach is bigger than I realized, or it may be that just creating it out of parts. I had a sense that it would have this open ended field to it, but I wasn't quite sure to what degree it would look at me. Was, a very consciously ethic under taking. And that was very scary. To me the whole excitement is to try to move beyond the last thing I've done. But I, I feel like I made that bargain with myself, you know, two books before Look at Me. And I've been continuing in that vein ever since. And will continue to, as long as I write. So let's ask about that. What is the next book project. How do you move the ball, I guess. Well, I think the thing that makes it challenging for me and exciting, is that I really am interested in writing a historical novel. That will take place in and around New York, sort of, during and after World War II. Mm- hm. And I don't know how I'll deal with the question of negotiating the distance from the present and how all of the will work. I'm kind of excited about that from a technical standpoint, but for me, just setting it in a different period, will be enough of a difference from what I've done before to make it feel. Fresh.
