## Transcript

>> It's flu season again, which means it's time to get in line for your flu shot. The flu shot can protect you from getting infected with the influenza virus, which can cause fever, chills, muscle aches, and generally leave you feeling miserable for a few days. Those are the benefits that we're familiar with. So, I was a little surprised when I came across a study by British researchers that showed the flu shot can protect the heart, as well.

>> If your doctor recommends the flu vaccination, there's a good reason to have it in terms of prevention of flu, and pneumonia, and complications. But there may be an additional benefit in terms of reduction of heart attack.

>> It turns out that heart attack rates go up during the cold winter months. And while some people have looked at factors such as snow shoveling and the burden that can place on the heart, these scientists thought it might have something to do with the flu. So, they went back and looked at the health records of more than 78, 000 middle- aged people in England and Wales over a six- year period. During that time, they found that those who were vaccinated for the flu lowered their risk of having a first heart attack by 19 percent. So, what does the flu shot have to do with heart attacks? I sat down with Dr.

Holly Andersen, a cardiologist at New York Presbyterian Hospital to find out.

>> People who are most likely to die from influenza are people with heart disease. And an infection causes inflammation. And inflammation increases factors in the body in blood clotting. And that may make somebody more vulnerable to have a heart attack.

>> That makes sense. But it's not a connection that most of us would make.

>> It totally surprises me, but to me, it's just one more really good reason to go ahead and get a flu shot. I am approaching the age when I have to start to think about heart disease. And so, hearing about this study, that flu shots can actually bring down my risk of heart attack, makes me feel even more compelled to get my flu shot than ever before.

>> So, if you're debating whether or not to get a flu shot this year, remember that it might spare you a few days in bed with the flu and protect your heart, as well.

>> Heart disease is the number one cause of death among Americans. And we try to work very hard at reducing people's risks. And this is an easy way to do it. So, I'm encouraging people more and more, who even young and healthy, to get the vaccine.

>> Thank you.

>> You're welcome.
