## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] At makermot we're out to democratize manufacturing. We're out to put the power of innovation, the power of manufacturing on your desktop. Just make it, imagine things, download them, print the out Boom [ MUSIC ] Three D printing is when you design something on your computer in 3D. And it builds it layer by layer. It takes a tool head. Which is kind of like a hot glue gun. And it draws a picture with it. Lifts it up a little bit and draws another picture on top of that picture. And layer by layer it creates your thing. [ MUSIC ] So, say you need a pair of pliers. You're in luck. I can just download the files, print them out i've got a nice pair of, of pliers here and I can make a pair for you, I can make a pair for all my friends.

No big deal. Nobody I know has to buy pliers We primarily use ABS which is same thing that LEGO is made of. Which is really durable strong material. If you've ever stepped on a LEGO, you've stressed tested this material. Strong. [ UNKNOWN ] We've got, a starfish here this was designed by Steve Conine and you can see the layers on this, he built it layer by layer. This is probably about a 20 minute print. We're printing out some stuff right now for an artist, artist named Takeshi and he's making a really cool zoetrope that has Popeye in it and little cans of spinach. This ability to just have ideas and make them right away speeds up the, the process of innovation and is really powerful for business.

This is really powerful for innovators. Is really powerful, powerful for inventors. OK, here we are at the bocade this is where the magic happens. [ SOUND ] These are the fully assembled machines. You can buy it fully assembled and it comes in a box. You take it out and it will just work you don't have to put it together. This is Collin, he's putting together maker bots. They're actually printing parts for themselves. There's one part that we print out that goes on the machine when it's fully assembled that the machines are printing out right now. I've dedicated my life to building tools for people to be creative with.

Up until we launched makerbot, getting a 3D printer meant spending tens of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Having a Maker Bot puts a 3D printer in your hands for a lot less. It's 1300 bucks to get a Maker Bot. It's a really different mindset. Most people just think, okay, where am I gonna go buy that? When you have a Maker Bot, your world changes. You think, okay. I need something. To I really need to buy it when I can just download it and print it or design it and print it? Thingiverse, a universe of things. It's where you go to download digital design. It's like a library of objects. Up until Thingiverse you couldn't download things.

You could download music, movies, books, but where do you go to download things? Early on in the Thingiverse days a user named Zaga, he needed a , A whistle. I think he was gonna go and referee his daughter's soccer game. So, in 15 minutes he designed it. Another 15 minutes printed it out. Toot, toot, toot. He's ready to go. He uploaded it to Thingiverse. I printed it out 15 minutes later. You can't get a whistle from Germany, where Zhago lives, to Brooklyn in you know, 15 minutes and have it be an exact replica. You'd have to like. Put them, with on a missle to get it here that fast. The idea is explodable.

You could be printing houses. There's people experimenting with that. We recently featured a car from Winnipeg and it's an incredible car. The first to have its car body come out of a 3D printer. 3D metal printers work faster than conventional methods. At just a fraction of the cost. [ MUSIC ] In the future, you're gonna be able to print out your dinner. You're gonna be able to print out replacement body parts. You're gonna be able to print out most of the things you need, and when you're done. Maybe he'll be able to just take those things and put 'em back in the machine and it'll make other things out of the things you don't need anymore.

We're just at the beginning of a big change in the way we think about how we get things and how we make. The applications are frontier to be explored and the things that will happen in the future will depend on people who are innovative and push the technology into the future. [ BLANK_AUDIO ]
