What You Need to Know About The Man Set to Become Egypt's Next President --- ## Transcript The results are in and the winner of TIME. com's Person of the Year poll for 2013 is General Abdul Fattah al- Sisi, the defacto ruler of Egypt. Al- Sisi got 450, 000 votes out of a total of 1. 9 million. Coming in 2nd place was Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Prime Minister of Turkey who got 356, 000 votes. Miley Cyrus, the American popstar got 279, 000. In 4th place was Narendra Modi, the controversial Indian politician who got 240, 000 votes and quite far behind in 5th place with 35, 000 votes was Edward Snowden the whistleblower. Al- Sisi's victory is perhaps not so surprising considering that the country with the largest number of votes on our poll was Egypt followed by India, United States, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. This has been a dramatic year for Al- Sisi. He was virtually unknown until he was appointed the head of military by Mohamed Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected leader. Then after widespread protest against Morsi, Sisi toppled the President and appointed a transitional government. Although his formal title is defense minister, he is far in the way the most powerful man in the Arab world's most populous country. Despite essentially heading a coup d'état, Sisi is widely popular among particularly urban Egyptians and the vote reflects that popularity and 2014 could be an even bigger year for him. Egypt is expected to hold the presidential election and there are widespread rumors that Sisi himself will stand for election and is very likely on the basis of his current popularity to win the vote. Erdogan's 2nd place finish is a little bit of a surprise. Turkey this year has been wrecked by protests against his government. Although his government seems to have survived, his personal popularity within the country is the lowest that has been for several years. However it is clear from the online poll that many Turks still hold him very high regard. The question now is whether Sisi will go from being the winner of the online poll to being TIME magazine's Person of the Year.
