## Transcript

Blessed are the peacemakers, says the Bible. But would be Mid East peacemaker, US Secretary of State, John Kerry, after nine months of grueling talks and and exhausting travel, hasn't felt any blessings. The effort he launched last summer, and he had hoped would bear fruit, by the 29th of April, is in shambles. Recriminations are flying fast and furious. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyhu suspended Israeli participation in the floundering talks following the conclusion last week of a reconciliation agreement between Hamas, which rules the Gaza strip, and Fatah, a movement lead by Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas.

I called on my cabinet ministers today and I said we're gonna take time out now for reassessment and try to figure out alternative paths to peace. But the simplest way to get back to the peace process is to have President Abbas renounce the pact with Hamas and come back to negotiations. But chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat brushes this off as a mere excuse, accusing the Israeli leader of making a mockery of the efforts of Secretary Kerry, who met dozens of times with Netanyahu. I think he needed to meet on the minute every minute with Netanyahu, just to convince him of uttering one sentence.

One sentence to stance on 1967, one, nine, six, seven in Hebrew [ FOREIGN ]. I will accept Mr. Netanyahu saying these numbers in Chinese but you know what, he never did it. I don't think he will. He wants to be the fault finder, the blame assigner, and the finger pointer. That's what this thing is all about. With angry accusations flying in all directions, the stage is now set perhaps for worse things to come. There's an old maxim in the Middle East that, in the absence of a peace process, imperfect though it may be, there's the danger that the exact opposite happens. That when the two sides stop talking to one another, they may start fighting one another.

Veteran Israeli negotiator, Uri Savir, worries that with talks at a dead end, the other dynamic now looms large. There is never a status quo in the Middle East. If either move two worlds negotiations, peace process, partial agreement, full agreement, all towards deterioration, violence, conflict, intifada, Hamas- Hezbollah, regional war. Today we took the turn in the wrong direction. And as this region has seen many times before, that turn in the wrong direction can come at a very high cost. Ben Wedeman, CNN, Jerusalem.
