The recent shooting of a Dearborn Heights Michigan woman has reignited the national debate over gun laws and self defense. Here's what you need to know. Stand your ground is a category of self defense law that allows people to defend themselves with deadly force even if they have an option of running away. It's origins fly in the common laws castle doctrine. Which allows people to defend themselves with deadly force against a home intruder. Over the last decade though, at least 22 states have expanded that law to apply outside the home, almost anywhere. Critics of these laws, especially gun control advocates say that it makes it too difficult to prosecute shooting and too easy for people to claim self defense.

There's also a powerful racial element to the debate. [ SOUND ] While the laws were not ultimately invoked in the trial. The 2012 shooting of unarmed Florida teen, Trayvon Martin, so controversy over the law. Which one study suggested is used more to justify white on black shootings than vice versa. In the recent Michigan case, an older white man shot a 19- year- old black woman through his front door after she banged on it in the middle of the night. He's been charged with second- degree murder. It's not yet clear whether he'll invoke stand your ground in his defense. The debate will continue.
