## Transcript

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conceded a significant defeat in local elections. Modi himself wasn't even on the ballot for the northern Indian state of Bihar, but he and his right- wing Bharatiya Janata Party treated the race as an unofficial referendum of sorts. And the results are in. It's more evidence Modi and the BJP had been slipping ever since the landslide victory in 2014's general election. Modi conceded after opposition secured close to 75 % of the 243 seats in Bahar's assembly. Bahar is BJP's second major electorial loss, and given Bahar's status as India's third most populous state, it's most signficant so far.

The group lost in India's capital, New Delhi, in February. Now, BJP is losing ground in the upper house of India's parliament which will make it more difficult to secure the two house consensus needed to pass reforms.
