[ MUSIC ] Graduation should be a time of celebration but more and more recent grads find it harder to pursue their dreams because of massive student debt and a lack of basic understand of personal financial management. That's why more and more I hear stories like this one From young professionals whose careers are just getting underway. My name is Chang and I work in advertising. I had $ 100, 000 in student loans, but I managed to get it down to $ 30, 000. Living in New York has been pretty touch since it's one of the most expensive cities in the world. So, because of that, I had to take up dog walking.

On the weekends I'm currently living in Brooklyn with three other roommates. But I need to move out in a week or so because I'm getting priced out by almost double my rent. I'd really like to live alone but I'm not sure if I can really afford it. I feel like on a monthly basis I'm doing pretty well, saving up money. Paying off my student loans on Time of course but at the same time thinking of grad school and adding on more student loans. But to figure how much I'll lose, I could definitely use some help on that. I want to know what I can do to take control of my loans and to be debt free while being comfortable living in New York city As a CFP, I find this extremely frustrating.

Because the early stages of your career should be filled with enthusiasm and optimism. What Shane is experiencing is all too common. There are certain things to consider when living in an expensive city and straddled with massive student debt First, weigh the pros and cons of your work commute, and cheaper neighborhoods farther away. One thing that should be a given, but is always overlooked, is to make a budget. Learn to live below your mean. In order to do so, you have to first break down the numbers and know where your hard- earned cash is going so that you can make adjustments. You should really look to keep your housing expenses at 25 % of your income and make sure that you're putting dollars away.

Lastly, exhaust all possibilities of employer and tax benefits to control your debt. Consider setting up a Roth IRA, so that you can use those funds for further education down the road. If you decide to go, we'll also putting away for retirement For young professionals like Cheng, there is light at the end of the tunnel but you've gotta have a plan. That's why I'm going to meet with him and put these principals in action, to get him to his destination, stay tuned.
