## Transcript

[ SOUND ] We're here at the Beach Build in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It's call the Absecon Island Beach Build Project. The project is to put sand onto the beach to protect and reduce damages from storms that could occur along the Atlantic Ocean coastline and protect the boardwalk and the public infrastructure. The reason we're here now for the emergencies is cuz a couple big storms came right in a row, took away all the protective dunes. So we need to come back and supplement the dunes to put the protection back. When we first got here in mid- June none of these dunes, from this point on, were here, they were all eroded.

Where we're driving now, we're near the ocean by a good 300 feet. Believe it or not, there's a pipe that runs under the beach out into the water and it, the dredge is hooked up to that. So we started pumping sand right from this area right here. The beach started at this position in this location and we've progressed to the south. We're currently in this area here. So all this beach is completed and we'll continue working our way this direction, to the south. To do a Beach Build, we A, need to have a design. A Beach Build template that we need to meet. We then find a borrow area that's suitable with the suitable material to build the beach.

We then get a dredge to go into the inlet to pull the sand with the dredge off the bottom, pull up onto the dredge and pump it out onto the beach. Through the baskets you see here and out on the beach and at that point the bulldozers and excavators will shape the beach into the form that the design calls for that will provide the storm damage reduction. The overall cost of the project is around $ 10 million. And about seven million of that is slated to be placed here in Atlantic city. Beach Build usually comes out as the most cost effective, for the money you pay, for the damages you prevent over the 50 years.

What our projects are there to do, is to reduce that burden on the Federal and State tax payers. For every dollar we spend, three or four dollars gets saved in the event of a storm over those fifty years.
