We all know we should be saving more, but as you may have noticed, money is just so easy to spend. Still, there are a few tricks that will help you sock it away. I'm Kristen Bellstrom, and you're Money Minute is starting right now. [ MUSIC ]. First, get specific. Picture the thing you're saving for in as much detail as you can. It's true that cutting back may mean fewer luxuries right now, but that's a lot easier to take when you know what you'll get to spend the money on later. Next, put a number on your savings target. Calculate how much you'll need to hit your goal, set a deadline and then come up with a plan for what you'll need to save each month to get there.

Now remove temptation, one way to do this is by automating your savings. If your using a 401K plan to save for retirement have your contributions funnelled directly from your pay- check to your account and don't stop there. Most employers allow you to deposit portions of your paycheck into several different accounts. So, you can choose to put some of your earnings straight into say, a 529 for college savings or an IRA for retirement. Finally, check to see whether your 401k has an auto escalation feature that let's you set up your account, so that the amount that you contribute automatically increases each year.

You'll barely notice when it happens, and the payoff is worth every penny. And that, is 60 seconds well- spent. [ MUSIC ]
