## Transcript

>> Koreans and the rest of the world look on as the North Korean government confirms the execution of Jang Song Thaek, the uncle of ruler Kim Jong Un and his former second in command.

>> State media reported Mr. Jang had admitted at a military trial on Thursday to attempting to overthrow the state and was then executed immediately.

>> This is considered the biggest upheaval in North Korean politics since Kim Jong Un succeeded his father to the leadership in 2011.

>> Rumors of Jang's political ouster began early last week before North Korea confirmed his removal Monday. The BBC re- broadcast a state media report calling Jang a wicked political careerist, a trickster and a traitor. KCNA's website also posted an article calling Jang, despicable human scum who was worse than a dog before eventually announcing his immediate execution. So what was the problem? Several experts point to the uncle and nephews difference in economic beliefs, with Jang wanting it the country to make reforms similar to China. Widely viewed as Kim Jong Un's mentor, helping to transition his nephew into rule after Kim Jong Il's death two years ago, there is plenty of speculation on the meaning of this move.

Jang's even been removed from propaganda documentaries.

>> I wasn't surprised that he was shown the door. I was surprised that it was so theatrical.

>> One [ unk ] Korean lawmaker who sits on the intelligence committee says this shows Kim Jong Un to be weaker than previously thought as he felt the need to punish Jang so publicly and brutally.

>> Now the world continues to watch North Korea's ruler to see his next move without his uncle and mentor by his side. For TIME, I'm Lauren Zima.
