This song which launched him as an internationally known musician is called Lakou Trankil. It was a plea to end the violence plaguing the country five years ago. Now, his mission to save Haiti has become more important than ever. >> There's so much things to say. The first images that I saw is the palace and I tell myself, what. The palace has collapsed. The palace? So I can't imagine the rest of the country. -[ Foreign Language ] >> Belo was in Guadalupe for a show when he heard the news about the quake. >> It gave me a shock that I cannot explain. I saw the images of-- I mean, white people dying, black people dying in Haiti, poor people and rich people going through the, I mean, the same situation in like less than a minute, everything is gone. >> In a country ripe with poverty and corruption, this disaster underscores Belo's message about Haitians meeting to come together to find solutions. >> My music always talks about unity. I always wanted to have a united nation. >> Now, his song Ayiti Leve or Haiti Rise Up resonate more than ever. >> It's a song where I'm describing Haiti as an island and there is no more trees, no more water. People are suffering and I'm telling this country, it's time to wake up. -[ Foreign Language ] >> In recent months Belo has done more than 25 benefit concerts. But to protect his wife and newborn baby and keep working on his third album, he also had to do something he never imagined he would do, leave the homeland he loves. >> The earthquake has changed my plan and now I'm in Paris. I'm trying to, you know, find my stability and work for Haiti and work on my album so the job is, you know, is bigger now. >> He recently returned to Haiti for the first time since the quake to give a concert in a tent city. Though the task of rebuilding the country is daunting, he says this could be an opportunity to start over and to focus on improving what he considers to be the most important thing for Haiti's future, education. >> Too many kids were out-- out of school before the earthquake. To me, the new beginnings start from there. -[ Foreign Language ] >> The song Ti Moun Yo talks about Haiti's homeless children. -[ Foreign Language ] >> I don't think we need the same Haiti that we had before. I don't think we will have it. Anyway, in a good or in a bad way, so we need to-- to go towards a different direction, you know what I mean? -[ Foreign Language ] >> For now, Belo will keep singing to bring hope to Haiti so the world doesn't forget about this troubled Caribbean nation. >> When I have the opportunity, when I have-- When I'm on stage, I send messages to keep telling the people that Haiti needs you, we still need you.
