We now know the downed plane could have a huge effect on HIV AIDS research. The International AIDS Society announced Friday, it believed more than a third of the 298 people on MH- 17 were researchers headed for Melvin. What was supposed to be a gathering of the greatest medical minds in the world fighting HIV. Became a place to eulogize colleagues. Joep was a wonderful person. I have no words, really, to try to express my sadness, I feel totally devastated if it is confirmed. That was IAS President Francoise Barre- Sinoussi talking about Joep Lange, the Dutch researcher whose death garnered the most media attention so far. We wouldn't have the drugs if there hadn't been the enormous activism in the gay community in the US. Transience, I mean, that helped a lot. << [ UNKNOWN ] said Lange was one of the first to fight the false stigma of the 1980's that HIV only affected gay men. Various reports said about 100 researchers headed to Melbourne were on MH- 17, but reporters in Australia talking to conference officials put the number at 108. The federal president of the Australian Medical Association told Time. The amount of knowledge that these people who died on the plane were carrying with them and the experiences they developed will have a devastating impact on HIV research. The amount of time it takes to get to a stage where you can come up with those ideas cannot be replaced in a short amount of time. One researcher in Australia took the tragedy one step further. Canadian researcher Trevor Bratten arrived for the conference early. And told ABC Australia, what if the cure for AIDS was on that plane? Really? We don't know. There were some really prominent researchers that have been doing this for a very long time and we're getting close to vaccines and people are taking about cures and the end of AIDS. Barrey Sunucci held back on just how big an impact the deaths of 100 plus top researchers will be on HIV research. But said the medical community must replace those who died. To move in, in this period of those who will not be there anymore. It's our duty, for us that are still there. In a message posted to it's website, IAS announced the conference in Melba would go on to honor it's colleagues fight against HIV AIDS.
