## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] [ SOUND ] When I was a child, my father for a few years, was a cartoonist. He would always be drawing and creating characters and environments where these characters lived. And, and I love that. Things were very simple. You know, circles and squares. And it, it was all reduced to the basic elements. Like you would draw a house or a tree, and it was just like, almost like a kid would draw it [ MUSIC ]. [ MUSIC ] I grew up in Buenos Aires, in Argentina. I came here to go to graduate school and do a Master's degree in architecture. I started doing kid's furniture almost from the beginning.

There was a recession similar to what's going on now. Almost no work in architecture. Then, even when I was doing architecture, my sketches and, and some of the projects, they looked a bit, kind of like for kids you know. When I started doing the furniture, literally my first job was my one bedroom apartment on, on 57th Street, so it had to be minimal and as least amount of work possible. Because I had like, a Black and Decker drill, and like a hand saw, in fact. The first chairs, I would say I designed them in the lumber yard. Because, I went to the lumber yard and I said, okay, what can I make the legs with?

How can I make the sides of this little chair? [ MUSIC ] So right there I said, no, wait, cut me a few strips of five inches of plywood. And with those pieces, I went home. And I just cut them and screwed them together and I made the first chair. I started selling through one store. And after that, I went to a trade show. And then I had some press here and there. And that's how it grew. At one point, I had an investor. The guy then had a lot of money and, and I did a bunch of furniture for his home. So he actually helped to launch a new collection. I mean now I'm doing a much more concerted effort to learn about marketing.

And as you grow and you can afford a bigger shop or purchase machinery and to hire more people, or what not. [ NOISE ] A good design is usually when you cannot tell that it was designed. When it almost looks like it was just built. The, the carpenter that builds a sawhorse or a table to have lunch. He's not thinking what's gonna look pretty. He thinks okay, what is gonna solve my problem. What is a surface where I can work. And it's gonna be strong and I can make it quick. And you can find beauty in that. And if not beauty, at least you find intelligence and you find knowledge. If you focus too much on the design in itself or if you put too much attention in the shape, then you are probably not paying enough attention to other things.

And it is something that translates into the designs and themselves. I like to keep them as simple as possible, as easy as possible. You know it's a drawer is a drawer, a door is a door and, and like kids understand that. Kids? They're not going to fake anything. They like it or they don't like it. It works or it doesn't. And when you see that, you know, you're doing something for them. That it helps them in their lives and in their daily activities, that's one of the most gratifying things. [ MUSIC ]
