## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] The prospects of getting a raise are good in 2016. The unemployment rate is the lowest in seven years. And employers are saying they're finding a hard time finding qualified candidates for jobs. Unfortunately, though, wages aren't rising as fast as the unemployment rate is dropping. So you're gonna still have to prove that you deserve a good raise. Raises are projected to be up 3 % in 2016. That's not quite as good as it was before the recession, when raises averaged 4 %. The top performers can expect raises of 5 % or more. Unfortunately, only about 10 % of workers get that highest rating.

Employers aren't giving the raises that they used to. There's a trend toward pay for performance bonuses. This. That means workers are going to have to do more to prove that they're in that top category if they want to get a permanent bump in their salary. If you want to do better than the average increase, you're gonna have to give your boss a good reason to give you more money. After all, the decision isn't up to him or her. They're likely gonna need to run it by somebody else. You want to make it easier for them to make their case. It's critical for you to quantify your accomplishments. Before you go in to talk to your boss, put together a brag sheet listing out all the great things that you've done for your boss this year.

Now it's easier in some positions to quantify what you've done. For example, if you're in sales, you can talk about landing a client that brought $ 2 million in revenue to the company. But there's more to quantifying what you're doing than dollars. There's lots of data you can use. For example, if you're a web designer, you can talk about how much you've increased traffic to your site. If you're a project manager, you can talk about how you've efficiently got a project done, or even got it done early. So, how do you know what to quantify? You need to know what is most valued by your employer. An easy way to figure that out is to look for job postings of similar positions.

See what kind of skills they're advertising for, and then highlight what you're doing. If you don't have the skills that are in demand, this is the time to think about getting training. You have to be proactive if you want to get that big raise. [ MUSIC ]
